MOV to MP4. Make it play anywhere.
iPhone and Mac videos are saved as MOV, often with HEVC video that Windows and many apps can't play. Convert them to an H.264 MP4 right in your browser, keeping the original resolution. Nothing is uploaded.
Free for files up to 100 MB. No sign-up, no watermark. Pro removes the limit for $4.99 a month.
Runs in your browser. Your file is processed on this device and never uploaded.
How to convert MOV to MP4
Drop in the MOV file.
Videos from iPhone, iPad, Mac screen recordings and cameras all work. MKV and WebM files can be converted the same way.
Click Convert to MP4.
The video is re-encoded as H.264 with AAC audio at high quality and the same resolution.
Download the MP4.
It plays in Windows Media Player, on Android, in PowerPoint and in every browser and editing app.
Why MOV files won't play everywhere
MOV is Apple's container format. Since iOS 11, iPhones record video in HEVC (H.265) by default to save space. Windows needs a paid extension to play HEVC, and many apps, upload forms and older TVs don't support it at all.
Converting to MP4 with H.264, the most widely supported video codec, fixes playback almost everywhere. The file usually gets somewhat larger, because H.264 needs more data than HEVC for the same picture.
To read HEVC, your browser has to support it. Safari on Mac and iPhone does; on Windows, Chrome and Edge can use the HEVC support built into most recent PCs.
| iPhone MOV (HEVC) | MP4 (H.264) | |
|---|---|---|
| Plays on Windows without extras | Often not | Yes |
| Plays on Android and in browsers | Varies | Yes |
| File size for the same quality | Smaller | About 1.5 to 2 times larger |
Questions about this tool.
Why won't my iPhone video play on Windows?
It's most likely HEVC video inside a MOV file. Windows needs the HEVC Video Extensions to play it. Converting to H.264 MP4 avoids that.
Does converting reduce the quality?
It's re-encoded at high quality and the same resolution, so the difference is very hard to see. Need a smaller file instead? Use the video compressor.
Can I stop my iPhone from recording HEVC?
Yes. In Settings, then Camera, then Formats, choose Most Compatible. New videos will be H.264, though files will be larger.
It says my browser can't read the video. What now?
Your browser can't decode HEVC on this computer. Try Safari on a Mac, Edge on a recent Windows PC, or the desktop app.
Prefer a desktop app?
The Mac and Windows app works offline and saves results beside your original. It includes 5 free conversions, then costs $1 once per computer, separate from Pro.
